When we first moved to the South 20 years ago on a military transfer, we were ready to embark on a new journey and curious about what this next chapter would bring. Driving across the country, we experienced a moment of pure magic in Louisville, Kentucky: fireflies. Seeing them for the first time, twinkling in the summer night, felt like a sign.
Fireflies symbolize something deeply meaningful to us: “A little light shining bravely in the darkness.” However small, each one carries its own glow—a reminder that every person has a unique light to share. In a world that can sometimes feel overwhelming, even the smallest glow makes a difference.
When we arrived in New Bern, we knew we had found the perfect place to bring Firefly Café to life. This community welcomed us with open arms, and we’ve seen time and again that same spirit of belonging—the belief that no matter who you are, you have a place here. That’s exactly what we want Firefly Café to be: a space where everyone is welcome, where individuality is celebrated, and where each person’s light can shine.
This cafe has been in the making for over 20 years and with the support of our friends and family, we have each brought our own glow to this project. Now, we invite you to bring yours.
